What? How is anything used as a backend? Backend for what? This is a non-question.

Anything can be used as a 'backend'. You could write some PHP that produced XML/JSON responses to requests for calculations, and that would be a 'compute backend' for another site that collected user input and presented the results.JAVA can be used as a backend
@KevinWorkman: By backend i mean where you store your data, just like what we do in sql or other databases.
There are databases out there written in java, for example Apache Derby. I suggest you write a more clear question and description of what you want to do if you want a more detailed answer

BTW I use my backend as a backend. It is quite comfortable.
