Thread: Using a Database of TextFiles for saving data

Hello all,

First I'm a beginner at Java programming. I have been programming for about 4 months now and have learned more or less the basics of Java. I have built a Java Swing program that is a quiz game; where the user can build multiple choice quizzes and single answer quizzes and also take them. All questions and answers get saved to directories and files. My question is whether or not this is the best approach? would it be better to use a database instead of text files to save data? I have a few more questions:

Any recommendations for learning game development for beginners?

The best way to store data depends on what is being stored and how it needs to be accessed, (to say it short).

Build a data set. Store it as many different ways as you can think of. Access it as many ways as you can think of. Benchmark and compare results. (self taught style) ...plus it is fun to play with the numbers, learning is a side effect of the fun...

Make games. Games like brick breaker, tic-tac-toe, pong, word search, sudoku, and many others not listed here are common first games. A few minutes on your favorite search engine should turn up many open source games you can download and modify too.
