What does the code looks like?
should i use if else statements
if(20)
---
else if (40)
----
else if (60)
etc.
this just doesnt feel like the right way to tackle this problem. Im clueless on how to code it though

The expression inside of the () in the if statement must return a boolean value ie true or false.
The posted code has int values not boolean values inside the (). The compiler should give you an error message for those statements.
There are several boolean operators that can be used to create a boolean expression: ==, != >, >=, etc
An expression is created by using two values with a boolean operator: val1 >= val2
