Can you explain a bit more about what you want to do? You're not going to be able to easily do OCR type of reading of the code. iText has examples of writing a barcode but reading it is not something I would attempt.

You could open the document in your favourite PDF reader on your laptop and take it to the self-service checkout at your local supermarket. That should work.
Search for "java read barcode" - there appear to be very many solutions to this problem out there. Try some of them. Let us know if you have any specific problems and someone'll provide some more useful help
