Do you have an online portfolio showcasing your work? Do you have examples of projects you've done in the past? What kind of experience do you have?

These aren't questions that I need to know, but that prospective employees need to know. Why would you hire somebody you know nothing about?

Thank you KevinWorkman for your response. I am really pleased that you respond to my query within such a no time. I really appreciate your point and completely agree with you that no one will offer me the work if he do not know anything about me. But I just want to tell you that I am a newcomer and really want a good guidance from the expert like you about how one can attract the clients and get projects from them. I would also appreciate the help regarding how to make my profile more trustworthy so that clients can contact us for their projects. Any help regarding the topics will appreciated! Thank you!

If you're an absolute beginner, you should probably reevaluate your assumptions. You're going to have to build up a body of work before anybody thinks about hiring you. Think about it this way: would you hire somebody to build your house if that person had never built a house before, or couldn't show you examples of anything they built?

So instead of trying to break into the freelancer world right away, I suggest you take a step back: give yourself a personal project, or get more involved in open source software. Build up an online portfolio that showcases your work, that way potential clients have something to look at.

There are also website designed for freelance work, but again, if you're really a beginner, I wouldn't suggest entering that world until you know more about programming.

Thank you Kevin! I would like to share few of the things here that I know the concepts till servlets and jsp. I have also done my post graduation project in JSP only. I have worked as a trainee at a company for 3 months as a java developer. So I am quite familiar with the concepts of SWING and jsp also. But thing is that I don't know anything about Struts,Hibernet and any of the java frameworks. So how can I get some serious development experience in java so that I can mention it in my portfolio. one more thing I would like to share that the company where I worked as a trainee was a small scale company and me with my project manager have participated in every phase of the SDLC. If you can guide me in details it would be my pleasure.
    Thank you!

Like I said, I recommend giving yourself a personal project that helps you learn more. If the end results of that personal project are good, then you can also use it to showcase your skills. You could also get more involved in an open source project, but you should have a good understanding of the code before you start making changes.

What kinds of jobs are you hoping to get as a freelancer? Start doing similar jobs on your own, both for practice and to build up examples of your work.
