To our American brothers.
How long would it take to drive from LA to NY? I should add I just want a base line figure. So no speeding, no side trips. Just an average cruise down whatever route it is now.

Improving the world one idiot at a time!
My guess put it at 2-3 days, and google puts it at just under 2 days. Add a few hours for sleeping/gas/food, and 2-3 days sounds about right.

Well, the distance between the two is 2462 miles.
So if you cruised down a road to NY from LA at about 40 miles per hour, it'd take about 60 hours.
Unless I did the math wrong. I divided this in my head. :S

Also take into account the time of year. Driving this in the winter when roads could be covered with ice (or blocked by snow) might be vastly different than the summer.

OK
So given 2 weeks or more should provide ample time to meander across the country and take in a few sights.

At an average of 4-5 hours driving per day, I can't help feeling you would have to really, really like sitting motionless for long periods of time, staring at something that really doesn't change very rapidly.ample time to meander across the country and take in a few sights

Sounds like you have an exciting trip planned Junky. Have you done something like this before?

We're all going on a summer holiday.
No more working for a week or two.
Fun and laughter on a summer holiday.
No more worries for me and you.
For a week or two.
We're going where the sun shines brightly.
We're going where the sea is blue.
We've seen it in the movies.
Now let's see if it's true.
Everybody has a summer holiday
Doing things they always wanted to.
So we're going on a summer holiday
To make our dreams come true
For me and you.

Not planned at all. Just a seed of a thought at the moment.
Travel history:Have you done something like this before?
US: Nashville, New York, Washington, Orlando when 15yo.
New Zealand when 18yo
Singapore, England, Scotland & Italy when 25yo
All were organised trips. Never a "get in the car, drive and stop were you want" trip.
