Hi,
the Oracle tutorials cover quite bit: The Really Big Index
As a beginner you should not use an IDE, because they hide a few important things, that you need to know. Start off with a texteditor of your choice and the command prompt. When you've mastered classpath, path and packges you might start using eclipse.

PhHein is correct that you shouldn't become reliant on an IDE in the beginning, however I feel that notepad is a step too far. I would recommend JCreator (JCreator — Java IDE). It is the IDE I started out on. It is very lightweight. It will not do auto-suggestions (at least it didn't when I used it) like some of the larger IDEs, but that is not a bad thing, since it encourages you to learn how to read the APIs.
It is a few steps above notepad, in the sense that it will allow you to compile and execute in the IDE (instead of the with the command prompt), and it allows you create basic project structures.

3. Give us an example of what the output should look like when done correctly.
