String literal properly enclosed in double quotes:
String this = "That";
Some editors or (especially) word processors use the open quote, end quote characters instead of straight double-quotes, and the compiler will not recognize the quotes correctly. Ensure that you are editing your source code with a plain text editor using the standard ASCII character set.
